From Library Journal
This illustrated history of volcano watching by three modern volcano watchers offers a fascinating look at the forces that created the Hawaiian Islands. Beginning with the natives' respect for the volcano goddess Pele, the work focuses on the era before sophisticated instrumentation and emphasizes the importance of early observation by missionaries and lay readers. It also examines the establishment of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory and the creation of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park in 1916, as well as the effects of recent eruptions. A number of black-and-white and color illustrations accompany the easily understood text. For public library and academic earth science collections. - Tim Markus, Evergreen State Coll.
