K-Gr. 3. These titles, part of the Kingfisher Young Knowledge series, introduce primary-graders to basic facts about familiar topics. Maps & Mapping explains what maps are, how they are made and used, and the symbols and projections found on them. Oceans and Seas covers saltiness, tides, waves and weather, plants and animals, and ecological issues. Both titles present single topics on full-color, double-page spreads. The text is brief, consisting primarily of captions for the clear, well-chosen artwork. Most illustrations are photographs, but the drawings and diagrams included are so attractive and realistic that casual browsers may not even realize they are looking at original artwork. Specialized vocabulary is defined at the bottom of the page on which the word first appears. Although the reliance on captions as the main text may leave sequential readers somewhat frustrated, these are attractive offerings that provide a surprisingly wide range of information that will be welcome in primary classrooms and interested browsers. Several simple projects are appended in each volume. Kay Weisman Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved
