One Saturday each fall, the football-crazed citizenry of Texas and Oklahoma gather for the annual game pitting the two state universities: Texas versus Oklahoma squaring off at the Cotton Bowl, in Dallas. Shropshire, a veteran observer of the college football scene and a resident of Dallas, meanders irreverently through the game's history, focusing on the 1967 game, the first he covered, but devoting nearly as much space to the over-the-edge fans as he does to the participants. Legendary coaches from Darrell Royal to Bud Wilkinson and Barry Switzer are scrutinized, as are current headmen Bobby Stoops and Mack Brown. The game has featured its share of infamous players, too, including Wahoo McDaniel (later a popular pro wrestler) and the prophetically named Joe Don Looney. Considering that this year's game will feature defending national champion Texas, interest in this volume will be significant. Pair this with Warren St. John's Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer (2004), about the equally crazed fans of Alabama's Crimson Tide. Wes Lukowsky Copyright © American Library Association.
